hey there!

I think I have a bad AC compressor. the thing sounds like two peices of metal rubbing each other. AC on or off.

When I got her the electrical system was all jacked up. The wires going to compressor has the plug that goes into the ac filter, but the filter has one plugged in.. I know its confusing.

Maybe I can take pictures or something.

Anyway, I was wondering ..my three options are to buy a reman'ed compressor + filter and installation looking around 400+

removing the compressor and installing one of those bypass pulleys 60 for pulley and Im guessing 100 installation.

or can I buy a shorter serpentine belt and just skip the compressor? And if I do will this effect anything, like will I need to do any changes?

Thanks in advanced!

Ok first, its an accumulator, not a filter, and that is the low pressure shut off switch (on the later 2nd gens) on the others it is the high pressure switch. The compressor should have a plug on the top close to the pulley, that is for the clutch, it will have one in the back for the high pressure shutoff.

A quick diag.

Take your belt off, and spin the pulley by hand. If you hear the scraping noise you are describing, and it seems to be coming from the pulley, put a new clutch on, then see what happens. Its an easy fix and will only take about 30 minutes for the novice to do. If the compressor feels like it has a lot of reisitance, or has a gritty feel, you will be best to replace the compressor. To me it sounds like a clutch though.

I will have to post some pictures. I dont have a digital camera, and I dont have a datalink for my phone. And for some reason I cant figure out how to send images to my palm through bluetooth. My friend did it with his razor, and my phone is newer and has bluetooth also. ::sigh::

back to the compressor.

I only see one "plug" and it has two wires coming from it, it is above the pulley. the wires come from the bunch that has one of the plugs that looks just like the plug that is on the accumilator. Now I hope we are speaking of the same thing, it looks like a aluminum can with four outlets on top of it.

The plug is just hanging there... not attached to anything. and I dont see anything it could plug into. And the person who had it before me just stuck a wire into the thing shorting it.

I am sorry. When you say take the belt, I have never done that before. I was never shown how to do these things and I have always lived on my own and couldnt afford monkeying around with the only vehicle that I can use and own that gets me where I need to be.

I have learned how to do simple things but usually I take my car to the shop. I have two cars now so I am just getting into actually learning how to repair stuff. I am mechanically inclined but I do fear i will break something and it will take me forever to fix.

i.e. When i took my EGR valve off and replaced the gasket with one of those "klean screen" gaskets I had apparently screwed up the bolt threading and had to rethread it. I got it back on, its still tight but its just an example. Plus rethreading that hole almost made me want to break someones legs

Thank you very much though for responding to me, and I am sorry for my inexperience.

use a 3/8 drive on the tensioner to remove belt and then follow steps that TMan said to do...disregard the S/C circle as you do not have a supercharger

Ah ha, alright, a year and model. Now we can go somewhere. I started wrenching on my own stuff because I couldnt afford to have someone else do it. Now im that someone that people bring their stuff to me. Believe me I broke PLENTY of my own stuff, and had a TON of downtime on my own vehicle before I finally started to get it right. That being said heres the following.

On the right side (left and right is always viewed as you are sitting in the drivers seat i.e. the passenger side is always the right side) about midway down you will have a spring loaded pulley. There is a square in it the same size as a 3/8's drive ratchet. As said, use a ratchet to unload the pulley, so the belt tension is relieved. Once this tension is relieved remove the belt and spin the compressor pulley. Refer to my first post for what you are feeling for. If i understand it right, the plug that is unplugged is to going to the accumulator. There should be a plug screwed into one of the bungs in the accumulator. If this isnt the case, it will need to be replaced. You wont have a plug in the back of the compressor. For now, just play with the compressor pulley and see what it feels like
