It came out of a 98 blazer with a 4.3 auto, I have no clue how many miles are on it tho it does look to be in good condition and you will need bearings races come with bearings.

Ask Mikz86TA (http://www.s10planet.com/forum/member.php?find=lastposter&f=284) if the g80 would be good for your 4.3 5 speed he knows alot more than i do about them if it were auto i would saw it would be good but since its a stick i am not sure he knows alot more than me

LowSDime97
10-26-07, 08:46 PM
ya it seems the zexel posi's are the way to go, but i wouldnt mind having an Eaton or just a good locker

White-V-6-S-Ten
10-26-07, 08:51 PM
Yea they are but they arent cheap. The g80 is an eaton just doesnt use cones or clutches.

I ran a G80 in my '91 Brick for Over 200K it was fine if you just want a LSD it's great but not really for racing. But as an everyday LSD it's fine. They have a rep for slining the weights and tearing schizz up but like I said 200K and I have one in the Monte I ran that for easy 100K no problem and my Dad has one in his 2000 Silvy with about 100K on it.

LowSDime97
10-26-07, 09:03 PM
ya thats basically what im looking for is a daily driver posi unit cuz im not gonna go out to the track every weekend and race it, i just want more traction and no more one-wheel peels!!

firefighter
10-26-07, 09:05 PM
It would do fine, and pretty cheap too.

11-20-07, 11:42 PM
I got mine from Hammer Head, and I love it! It is a great addition to the 3.42's I had out back already. Also, the one wheel peel thing is history! A decent unit, and for that price, you can't go wrong.

LowSDime97
11-20-07, 11:46 PM
ya i already bought mine so looking at this post and seeing him selling it for 50 bucks kinda hurts...but o well what can ya do?

Mikz86TA
11-21-07, 01:38 AM
The G80 that came in my truck seems to work great. And the research Ive seen, they are a good all around in trucks. Mine is a 8.5 diffy tho. If I had a 7.5 that needed one, Id pick it up from you, but I dont. Have you tried Flea-Bay?

White-V-6-S-Ten
11-21-07, 02:01 PM
HEy lowsdime you had asked about it before... MAybe you forgot about it. Oh well maybe someone else would need it for their truck.
I just want to get back out of it what i have in it since i have a much better piece.... Zexel torsen....!!!!!!!!!!

I might be interested in the G80 but I need to check if it will work in my '89 4x4 blazer. I know G80's are not a great offroad posi but my blazer will only see light off road trails. As soon as I can I'll check it out.

Hammer Head
11-22-07, 04:58 PM
so long as your blazer has 28 spline axles & it's a 7.5/7.625 rear the G80 will work out. around 88/89 GM switched over to the 28 spline axles.

White-V-6-S-Ten

Well its still sitting around if you are interested pm me.

Just out of curiousity is there an rpo code that will tell me if it has 28 spline axles? The rear end looks identical to my 2000 s-10 so I'm pretty sure it's the standard 7.5/7.625 rear end. I need to do some investigating.

Mikz86TA
11-23-07, 01:01 AM
No RPO. It was a change in a certain year and up

Hammer Head
11-23-07, 01:06 AM
yea, 88/89.. pretty sure it was in 88 GM changed the design. Need to change you diff fluid? easiest way to find out is to pull an axle & count the splines.

As a matter of fact I do need to change all the fluids in the blazer. I need to find some extra time (and money) to change the fluids then I can count the splines.

my poor dime needs the tranny fluid changed lol same stuff from 98 lol

ok so when i put the new carrier bearings on the unit, does a shop need to do this or can it be done by taking a dead blow and brass hammer to it? like taking the hammer and tapping it onto the carrier?

Mikz86TA
11-24-07, 01:22 AM
It needs to be pressed on evenly with a press.

Hammer Head
11-24-07, 01:31 AM
Could always take a 2x4, set it on there & hit it squarely w/ a mallet.. taking care not to damage the bearing race, if need be. But being pressed on is the preferred method on installation.

LowSDime97
11-24-07, 01:45 AM
so how to u get them "pressed on"?

Hammer Head
11-24-07, 01:57 AM
W/ a press.. & use my method if you don't have a press. BUT, a GOOD shop will have one & maybe they'll let you use it.. remember not to press them on too tight or you'll **** the bearings up & have to get another set.

LowSDime97
11-24-07, 01:59 AM
so how exactly do u know if u have pressed them on too tight?

Hammer Head
11-24-07, 02:09 AM
Dependin on how badly you've got them jammed on from least to greatest on the FUBAR scale.. just a little tight & not spinning (just pull them back a little until they spin freely) to 'OH ****! the bearing race is all crushed & there's roller bearings all over the floor!'.. haha SO.. just make sure you have them seated flush & spinnin freely!

LowSDime97
11-24-07, 02:12 AM
haha ya i see sounds like common sense too basically, i may jus end up doin it myself wheni first start tearing into the rear next saturday :D

12-12-07, 11:30 PM
3.73, I believe.

LowSDime97
12-13-07, 11:24 AM
ok so im kinda pissed off...my G80 is pretty much junk cuz it locks up to an extent but i dumped the clutch last night to see the marks it would make and it started to make two marks and then it went to a one-wheel-peel, so im like WTF! i mean i do notice better traction especially when its wet out i dont break traction anymore like i use to on the open carrier, did i basically just waste my money on a ****ty G80?

badasS10
12-13-07, 11:40 AM
G80's only lock up when one wheel spins 100 rpm faster than the other, I believe. And they only stay locked for speeds up to 25 mph, then it acts like an open. I read somewhere that you can shave the weights inside the G80 itself to allow it to lock up and stay locked up to 50mph, but I wouldn't recommend trying it. Yours is not junk, it's just functioning like it's supposed to. It's a great unit to have for the $, and are easy to find. I also think somewhere in a thread that there's a rebuild kit for these, but you could aways upgrade to a better unit.

LowSDime97
12-13-07, 11:42 AM
ok i see what ur saying now, i mean i have done a burnout it before and felt the rear get loose and get sideways a lil and did leave two marks, i was thinking i wasted my money on a junk G80, and hell ya im gonna upgrade to a Torsen by next spring when its warmer and i have more money

White-V-6-S-Ten
12-13-07, 04:05 PM
Basass10 I do still have the g80 but, A guy on sseriesforum seems like he wants it but dont really show the initative to get it so i am going to give him a few more days and if not its yours if you still want it. If you can wait
Thanks!

j894
12-13-07, 05:00 PM
you really don't want it to lock at 50mph. Unless your going straight. heh

BTW, doing burnouts with them is what breaks them... if you don't do it right.

holsinger17
12-13-07, 05:27 PM
Could always take a 2x4, set it on there & hit it squarely w/ a mallet.. taking care not to damage the bearing race, if need be. But being pressed on is the preferred method on installation.

to make the manual method easier you can heat the bearings up either by baking them to get them hot since metal expands once its hot, or you can use handheld propane torch with a rubber mallet and 2x4

I was out at the bone yard yesterday and seen 4 or 5 of them out there. They get 25 bucks for them. You can get the rearend for 75 bucks. Thats what I did. It had new brakes on it too.

SCredneck
04-10-08, 03:38 PM
The boneyards around here will not allow you to browse the yard. They operate like a parts store, you tell them what you want, and they either have it or they don't. They don't allow you to browse the yard to see if you can find something that will work. And then they want to rape you. I did find a 4l60e at one the local salvage yards last week (lost reverse in mine and don't have the cash to have it rebuilt right now). They wanted $975 PLUS my core for on with 173,000 miles already on it. I can almost buy a professionally built NEW one for that and still keep my old one as a spare.

Man that bites big time. The yard I go to is a u pull it yard. They charge you $2.00 to get in. Then go get what ever you want.

SCredneck
04-11-08, 01:17 AM
Also, the two main yards close to me won't keep anything over 10 years old. Making it VERY hard to put together stuff for my son's 76 Charger.
