I was banging around the battery compartment in my 2000 S-10, replacing one of the hold down screws and after replacing the pan and hooking back up the battery, the ABS light is on. (167 k miles) Brakes seem solid. Nothing was going on with sensors or tires at that time. Has the ABS unit gone south?
:p

Yes. "....hooking back up the battery,". battery was disconnected and reconnected. I have done this several times and the light is still on.

I wish I could say the same! yeah, I was talking about a screw attaching the ground wire to the rad support that rusts.
You might try to pull and reset codes with a scanner or get it done at Autozone. I will say that on my Vette, if the brake fluid get just a tad bit low, that will set the idiot light. You might try to add just a bit to see if it fixes it.

sensor could have gotten dirty

yeah, the whole battery thing seems like a bit of a coincidence, but this problem is often caused by dirty sensors. clean them and see if it helps.

:p Sensors located on the front wheels? I have not done much under the frame on this. and want to keep it as a daily driver. Clean with what? Solvent? H2O? Thanks, rrowanj:D

From what I've read (Haynes)--If it's 4 wheel ABS, then each wheel has a sensor. If it's 4wd and only 2 rear wheel ABS, the sensor is in the transfers case, so I guess the idea of being dirty wouldn't apply there.
Check out this link from Advance Auto about how to clean them:

Need some codes posted up guys. Anything else is shooting in the dark.
As said, go to your local parts store and get the codes read and cleared.
